SO MUCH FOR THE SNF.

Sam tramped into the Monroe Building’s parking garage, nodding with approval at the carnage he saw. He passed by the useless remains of a blockade: the bent steel girders, splintered wooden posts, and other debris that had formed it now strewn across the asphalt ramp. The remains of a few of his children were scattered in a circular pattern a few yards behind it, surrounding a large scorch mark tinged with blood. Around the corner he saw the thick posts that held up the garage were cracked and chipped. Concrete dust rained down when a light wind blew. He entered the second parking level, observed his obedient lovelies dragging corpses across the pavement, leaving scarlet trails behind them. The bodies were being stacked in parking spaces on the opposite side, separated into two groups—whole cadavers and the mutilated. Though it was sloppy work, the way his creations went about their business was regimented and orderly.

Walking across the garage, passing the ramp and the stacks of death, he placed his human hands on the cordon and gazed out at the burning city of Richmond. It had all happened so fast—twelve hours, and the conflict was all but won. In taking the Monroe, he had captured the flag, as his body’s previous resident would have said. He leaned back and stared at the bright sky, the sun behind him as it started on its journey to the other side of the world. The building’s shadow stretched out before him, a god’s shadow, shrouding in darkness everything it came in contact with. He smiled. He couldn’t think of a better omen.

Closing his eyes, he retreated inward and outward at the same time. Now that the battle was almost over, now that the enemy’s numbers were decimated, he could focus on events elsewhere. He saw through the eyes of millions of his children, and he sensed the ones standing around his physical body tense as his presence drifted into them. He was everywhere and nowhere at once. He had conquered almost everything in the physical realm. Europe was his, having fallen swiftly under his children’s claws. The takeover of Africa was nearly complete, save for the savage inlands. In fact, the only conflict still continuing was in northern Asia, where the people had proved quite adept at using the harsh conditions to their advantage. Sam was inclined to just leave it to them. Let them stay up in the cold rather than accept his salvation.

Moving closer to himself, he saw South and Central America in shambles. As the site of the
